About this piece

Crimson silk, a long white beard and a dark skullcap catch the light in "Old Chinese Man", an oil on canvas portrait signed Zak at lower right and painted around the 1960s.

The painting follows the academic portrait tradition: a dark background, a single warm light source and close attention to fabric. The gold embroidery on the robe and the objects on the table behind are picked out in small highlights, while the face, beard and hands are modelled softly as the sitter bows his head.

It hangs in an ornate gilt frame with a patterned outer edge and a gold inner slip, the same style of frame used on many Tretchikoff prints sold in Australia at the time.

Condition: Good vintage condition with minor marks. Please refer to photos. Frames Canvas: 56 x 46 cm.
