About this piece
A monumental floor vase (55cm high) from Ceramano, the West German workshop established in 1959, decorated in the Ägina (warrior) pattern that Hanns Welling designed in 1960 as part of a series drawing on the art of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.
The key design is a procession of spear- and shield-bearing warriors in a smooth brown glaze by wax resist and sgraffito so that they stand out sharply against the pitted, crater-like cream surface for which Ceramano's decors are famous.
At 55cm tall and 35cm wide, this is considerably larger than the usual Ägina vases, which tend to be 15-30 cm. A beautiful freestanding floor piece, rather than requiring a shelf or sideboard.
The base is hand-incised with the design number 706, the decor name Ägina, "Ceramano W. Germany Handarbeit" (handmade) and the decorator's initials.
The vase is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, hairlines or restoration, and only light surface wear to the unglazed foot area – expected for its age of 60 years.
