Rows of medallions in green, cream and blue repeat across a deep red ground on this large wool Axminster rug from the 1980s, which measures 5.45 m by 3.65 m.
Axminster describes the weave: a cut pile made on a loom that sets each colour in place tuft by tuft, which is what allows a pattern with this many colours. The design draws on village rugs from the Caucasus and Persia, with stepped geometric motifs, small stars and hooked outlines around each medallion. The wool pile is soft underfoot and springs back from daily foot traffic.
The rug has been professionally washed and cleaned, and every edge has been overlocked so it will not fray. There is no damage and there are no stains.
At this size it suits a large living room, or can sit under a dining table for eight with room for the chairs on every side. Most ready made rugs stop at around 4 by 3 metres, so a piece this size is hard to find.
