About this piece
Early 20th C. Balinese Wayang Kulit puppets are traditional Indonesian shadow theatre figures carved from buffalo hide and hand-painted with intricate detail and gold leaf. Each puppet is mounted on horn sticks for manipulation during performances. These pieces represent characters from epic narratives like the Mahabharata, with distinctive features—high crowns for royalty and deities, refined postures for nobility—that convey status and personality at a glance. Authentic craftsmanship and cultural significance make them prized by collectors and theatre enthusiasts alike.
