About this piece
This original, signed and dated 1986 vintage oil painting features a vivid, narrative composition rooted in surrealism and traditional Indigenous Australian Dreamtime storytelling.
Artwork Features & Description:
- The Story: The painting is inspired by the legend of Brolga, a young maiden who loved to dance. Transformed into an elegant crane, she remained to teach her beautiful leaping and stepping movements to others.
- The Composition: On the left, a dancing human silhouette is captured mid-motion, while a large grey and white brolga crane mirrors the steps across the red earth.
- The Backdrop: A striking, personified laughing sun with an expressive open mouth with a missing tooth dominates the centre horizon, casting golden light across a vast desert outback. It reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously! The sweeping twilight sky is filled with pastel blue, orange, and yellow hues.
- Framing & Signature: The artist's signature, "N. J. Davy", is clearly visible in the lower left corner, and the title is noted on the back. The piece comes beautifully housed in its original mid-century style wooden frame with an inner textured linen fillet.
