About this piece

Sylha was a Melbourne studio pottery, and the name is simply Sylvia Halpern folded into one word. Trained under Klytie Pate, Sylvia was the creative hand while her husband Artur built the kilns and ran the business, and from the early fifties they turned out slip-cast domestic ware that helped furnish mid-century Australian homes, later working out of the Potters Cottage at Warrandyte.

This ewer is from that production, marked Sylha, a confident pouring form in their house glaze. It is a piece of Melbourne's post-war studio scene, made by a woman whose name is hidden in plain sight on the base.
