The underside engraved Orrefors P 3397 C5 (with additional cipher letters denoting the master glassblower or engraver).

Artist Biography
Sven Palmqvist (1906–1984) was one of the definitive forces of Mid-Century Scandinavian modernism. Born in Sweden, he spent his entire illustrious career at the Orrefors glassworks, beginning as an apprentice engraver and later graduating from the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. Palmqvist is internationally celebrated for his technical innovations in glass manufacturing, most notably inventing the Kraka and Ravenna techniques, as well as developing the Fuga centrifugal casting process in the 1950s. His work seamlessly bridged the gap between highly expressive, hand-worked art glass and clean, utilitarian commercial design, earning him a Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957.

Archival records from the Swedish glassworks register model 3397 as an art glass vase/sculpture rather than a piece of functional stemware or a server. The high, solid conical foot balances a relatively shallow, organically contoured bowl, mimicking the silhouette of a heavy chalice or goblet. However, its structural proportions, dramatic asymmetrical lip, and the fluid orientation of the wheel-carved abstract decoration are characteristic of Orrefors’ mid-century sculptural vessel production.
