Details
This good quality mahogany country house letter box is a wonderfully decorative 20th century reproduction of one that would have stood on a table in the lobby or foyer of a country house, club or up market guest house around the latter part of the nineteenth century. It is modelled on the iconic red British pillar postboxes that were known as the First National Standard box which came into service in 1859, and were in use around the United Kingdom. Family or guests could deposit their outgoing mail in the box to be taken to the local post office by the footman. This one stands 420 mm (16.5 inches) high with a diameter of 224 mm (8.75 inches). The brass flap is stamped with the enamel filled "LETTERS". The central door has its key and and also carries a copy of the postal rates and the time the box would be cleared. Set into the plinth is a brass handled drawer which would have been for stamps. It is in excellent condition with a nice patina.
