Details
This pottery lidded jar by Reg Preston (1917-2000) is decorated with a painted abstract pattern to both the body and the lid. Inside and out, the ridges formed by Preston's hands as he formed the piece on the wheel are still visible. It stands 170 mm high to the top of the lid and the body has a diameter of 157 mm. The base is signed with his painted signature. It is in very good condition and would date from the mid 1960's.
After studying in London in the late 1930's, Preston later studied under John Knight and Klytie Pate at the Melbourne Technical College (later RMIT). In 1958, with his wife Phyl Dunn, Arthur Halpern, Gus Mclaren and Charles Wilton, Preston set up the Potters Cottage in Warrandyte, east of Melbourne. In 1985 Preston and Dunn moved to Woolamai on Western Port Bay.
