Biography:
Kathrin McMiles (1939-2017) was born in Victoria and trained as a potter under Peter Rushforth at the East Sydney technical College. Setting up a studio in Turramurra, NSW, she began making functional stoneware pots and sculptural and non-functional forms, holding her first solo exhibition at Gallery 16, Sydney, in 1973. She has entries in the 1973 and 1977 directories, where her mark is given as an oriental-looking K in a circle, and her work may also be signed with her full name. With VIrginia Hollister, she published Contemporary Australian Figurative Ceramics (Wahroonga, NSW, c1988), the catalogue of a travelling exhibition compiled for the Fifth National Ceramics Conference held in Sydney. In 1989, she completed a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Sydney College of the Arts. In 1991, she gave up a job teaching ceramics at Nepean CAE Art School, NSW, to set up Pandora Productions with the aim of making limited-edition production tableware as well as one-off pieces. During this time, she also found the time to obtain a Master of Creative Arts from Monash University. Moving to Byron Bay, NSW, in the 2000s, she completed an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts from Lismore TAFE in 2008 and exhibited as an artist-sculptor in the Northern Rivers area.
