About this piece
Pair of vintage blanc de chine vases in white porcelain, each modelled as a leaping koi emerging from stylised waves. Intricate reticulated (pierced) detailing runs through the bodies, with sculptural wave forms at the base and hand-finished nuances evident across the openwork lattice and fins. The pure white glaze underscores the form and relief.
Produced in Hong Kong during the mid-20th century (circa 1960s–1970s). The blanc de chine style references the long-established white porcelain tradition of Dehua, China. The openwork allows light to pass through, creating shadow play; they can be displayed as a balanced pair or individually as sculptural objects.
