About this piece

Pair of antique Japanese vases from the late Meiji period (1868–1912), executed in a blue-and-white palette with additional painted accents in red-brown, brown and gold. Decoration features birds, flowers and butterflies, with further blue-and-white artwork to the interior.

Each vase presents a circular body with a tapering neck and a flared, finely crimped rim. While many Meiji-era examples are known for red and gilt detailing, decoration varied by region, with blue and white widely used in parts of Arita; these vases reflect that tradition while incorporating applied polychrome elements.

Condition: Structurally excellent with no cracks or repairs. Some wear to the applied painted decoration consistent with age.
