  Bronze objects from the Qing period often carried both utility and presence and this charcoal iron is a clear example. The bowl form was designed to hold embers while the smooth underside was passed over silk to warm and finish the fabric. Age and use have shaped the surface into a rich dark patina that speaks to its long working life.
  The vessel shows traditional Qing decorative motifs cast in repeating spirals and leaf forms with the original bronze walls thick and assured. The wooden handle is later in date yet suits the piece and allows it to function as a historical object rather than a fragile relic.
