About this piece

Hand-painted portrait of a young Jesus Christ on porcelain, late 19th century. The image follows Heinrich Hofmann’s Christ in the Temple (first painted in 1881) and is signed ‘Wagner’, a detail that suggests a German origin. Based on the source work, the piece can be dated post-1881 and is believed to have been executed before 1900.

Presented in its original gilt timber frame with original backing material. The work appears to remain in an untouched state and is in excellent condition for its age.

A representative example of European hand-painted porcelain portraiture of the late 19th century.
