About this piece
A beautifully executed original oil painting by listed German artist Gabriele Daube (1901–1988), capturing the warmth and atmosphere of a bustling Mediterranean market beneath towering arcaded buildings.
Painted with confident, expressive brushwork, the composition draws the eye through the lively marketplace, where figures gather beneath sunlit awnings and deep architectural shadows. Rich earth tones are contrasted with vibrant touches of turquoise, terracotta and blue sky, creating a wonderful sense of movement and place.
Daube studied in Hamburg under renowned German modernists including Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann and Heinrich Stegemann, later becoming recognised for her expressive landscapes, city scenes and figurative paintings. Her work is represented in auction records and private collections internationally.
Presented in its original mid-century gilt frame with linen liner, this substantial artwork makes an elegant statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
+ Measures: 78cm wide, 68cm high and 4.5cm deep.
+ Very good vintage condition. The painting displays beautifully with no obvious tears or significant paint loss observed. The original gilt frame has age-related scuffs, small losses and general wear consistent with age. The linen liner shows minor age-related marks.
