About this piece

Kartell was started in Milan in 1949 by a chemical engineer and an architect, Giulio Castelli and Anna Castelli Ferrieri, and the first things it made were ski racks and laboratory ware, plastic standing in for glass that broke. In 1955 one of its buckets won the Compasso d'Oro.

Philippe Starck showed the company what polycarbonate could do, La Marie in 1998 and Louis Ghost in 2002, chairs moulded in one transparent piece. What none of it could do was be soft. Pop is Piero Lissoni's answer to that, made with Carlo Tamborini in 2007. The sides, back and base are a single piece of clear polycarbonate and the cushions drop into it, so the chair is upholstered without hiding anything. The structure is the part you can see through.

Stamped on the shell. Kartell, made in Italy, design P. Lissoni.
