Details

Terracotta sculpture of Sisyphus by Henri Bargas (born Paris, 1885; active 1920s–1930s), circa 1925–1935. Bargas worked across animal and academic subjects, his modelling noted for expressive handling and precise detailing.

Born in Paris, Bargas studied under Vermare and collaborated with É.-J. Ruhlmann and Marcel Sandoz. He worked alongside Parisian artists at the Jardin des Plantes, observing animals from life. His practice drew on classical Greek art and the influence of Antoine Bourdelle; subjects included Heracles the Archer, Ulysses, and female nudes.

Exhibition history includes the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Salon des Artistes Français in 1932, where he presented Les Ailes Brisées. Terracotta was his preferred medium, often finished with coloured patinas—green, brown, or left in the natural clay tone.
