Details
This large wheel thrown stoneware teapot by Harold Hughan (1893-1987) is decorated on either side with a buff coloured cartuoche containing abstract Japanese like markings done in blue.
The rest of the pot is glazed with a very simple speckled fawn colouring. Where the base of the handle joins the body, Hughan has raised a shallow herringbone design, and together with the thumb piece at the top of the handle, this gives the pot some nice little understated features. The base carries Hughan's painted signature as well as his impressed rebus. It stands 175 mm high, and the body has a diameter of 170mm. It is in very good condition.
Hughan was awarded an MBE in 1978, for services to pottery.
