Hans J. Wegner CH445 "Wing" Chair
Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960, the CH445 Wing Chair represents a fascinating period in the designer's career when he began exploring upholstery as a means of creating bold sculptural forms rather than merely providing comfort. Although conceived in 1960, the chair was produced only in very limited numbers before being discontinued. In 2006, Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the design using Wegner's original full-scale drawings, allowing a new generation to appreciate what has become one of his most celebrated lounge chairs.
The chair takes its name from the distinctive "wings" that extend from either side of the high backrest. While Wegner never explicitly described a symbolic meaning behind the name, the designation is widely understood to reference these elegant wing-like projections, which gently wrap around the sitter and provide exceptional support for the shoulders, neck and head. More than a visual flourish, the wings create a sense of enclosure and comfort, transforming the chair into a personal retreat.
What makes the CH445 particularly remarkable is its balance of opposites. It possesses a commanding presence, yet appears surprisingly light thanks to its slender stainless-steel frame. The generously upholstered body seems to float above the floor, while the chair's carefully angled legs encourage a naturally relaxed seating position. Wegner paid extraordinary attention to ergonomics, shaping the backrest and seat to support a variety of sitting positions without compromising the chair's sculptural purity.
As with many of Wegner's finest works, the beauty of the Wing Chair lies in its ability to unite comfort, craftsmanship and timeless design. More than six decades after its creation, it remains strikingly contemporary, equally at home in a modern architectural interior, a curated design collection, or a sophisticated living space.
