One-of-a-kind. This exact table cannot be made again.
There was a pine coffee table in my family lounge room in the late eighties. Solid, low, chunky, the kind of furniture that just existed without trying. This table started there, and ended somewhere else entirely.
It's built from southern blue gum felled on a working station property in Birregurra, Victoria. The timber is estimated to be 80-90 years old (possibly older). The grain is unlike anything I've seen before: deep tiger striping, dark figuring that shifts from amber to near-black in different light, and sections of near-fiddleback silvering that you genuinely cannot photograph properly. Two coats of Feast Watson Scandinavian Teak Oil, matte/satin finish.
The form is simple and deliberate. Four chunky legs, a generous top, rounded over on every edge your hand will ever touch. Nothing sharp. Nothing fussy. The legs extend 30mm above the table surface — a detail that gives it a distinctly considered quality without shouting about it.
The details:
- Top: 1200 × 480mm
- Height: 400mm
- Legs extend 30mm above table surface
- Timber thickness: 38mm throughout
- Finish: Feast Watson Scandinavian Teak Oil, 2 coats, matte/satin
How it's built:
Joints are dowelled and glued throughout. Leg supports are glued and clamped to the underside of the top, giving each leg two connection points for long-term rigidity. Every external edge carries a 19mm round over profile, the legs, the top, the supports. It is built to be used, not looked at.
The timber:
Southern blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) is one of Australia's hardest and most durable timbers. This stock comes from a finite supply, a single station property, and carries the character marks of genuine aged hardwood. Tight grain, natural colour variation, occasional small feature marks that are filled and finished. Not manufactured. Not engineered. Not repeatable.
In your home:
Low, wide, and grounded, this sits comfortably in front of a two or three seat sofa and reads as a considered object rather than a furniture store purchase. The 480mm depth gives you real surface area. The 400mm height keeps it proportional to low-profile sofas without disappearing under standard height seating.
A note on making to order:
I can make another coffee table in this form. I cannot make this one again. The Birregurra timber is a finite supply and every board reads differently. If you'd like something made to order, message me, but what you're looking at here is genuinely unrepeatable.
Every furniture piece leaves with a handwritten timber provenance card.
