Grant Featherston designed the D350 Contour dining chair in 1951, and this restored example has been reupholstered in a textured grey hopsack weave.
The D350 belongs to the plywood shell Contour range that made Featherston's name. A curved and shaped back and seat shell rises from four tapered, outsplayed legs and wraps the sitter in a single sweep. The National Gallery of Victoria holds D350 Contour dining chairs in its collection, a gift from Grant and Mary Featherston. Featherston (1922 to 1995) later consulted to Aristoc Industries from 1957, and from 1965 he worked in partnership with his wife, the designer Mary Featherston. The D350 predates that partnership and is Grant's own design.
The chair has been fully restored in our Torquay workshop and newly reupholstered by one of the original Featherston factory upholsterers, so the work follows the standard the chair was built to. The open basket weave gives the grey fabric a flecked, two tone look, and with the button detail it sits well against the warm timber of the legs. Condition is excellent.
Dimensions: 74 cm H x 46.5 cm W x 56.5 cm D. Sold as a single chair, which suits a desk, a bedroom corner or an extra place at a timber extension table of the same period. Wipe the legs with a soft dry cloth and vacuum the upholstery lightly.
