One of our favourite jewellery styles is what is known as 'Etruscan Revival', and this particular piece is a very fine example. The pendant is in the form of a hinged locket and is crafted from 18 karat yellow gold and features the French eagle gold mark. The front of the locket is set with a large oval cabochon piece of nephrite jade which is bordered by six natural red rubies. Amongst the rubies is a dense ground of gold granulation which are in groups of four and evenly applied to the piece. To the rear side of the locket the gold granulation continues and almost has the appearance of a carpet or wallpaper in its precise placement. The bale of the locket has further gold granulation to the front, along with another natural ruby, which when combined with the other six total 0.50 carat. There is a very small maker's mark to the bale which unfortunately we have been unable to attribute to a particular jeweller, however the letters inside the cartouche appear to be 'AB'. The locket likely dates to the 1870s when Etruscan Revival jewellery was at its height in France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Etruscan Revival jewellery was inspired by the 'Grand Tour' along with the discovery of ancient tombs and archaeological sites which were heavily laden with gold jewellery often featuring granulation. To the inside of this locket there is a glass covering which is hinged, allowing a lock of hair or a photograph to be safely concealed inside. In very good overall condition there are few signs of wear and use, and for a piece 150 years old it is in remarkably fine order. An absolutely spectacular example of Etruscan Revival jewellery manufactured from the most buttery gold!
