There's something quietly satisfying about a table that tidies itself away: push the chairs in and the whole set resolves into a single clean circle of teak, no legs poking out, nothing left mid-thought. It's the kind of detail you don't notice in a photo but fall for the moment you see it in person, the sort of piece that makes people stop mid-sentence at a dinner party to ask where it came from.
Ernst Hansen made this dining set in Hawthorn, Melbourne, in the 1960s, working in the Danish tradition his name carries. The four chairs are cut to nest precisely flush beneath the table's edge, a small piece of considered engineering as much as furniture design, and the round teak top carries a warm, even patina built up over decades of use.
The table comes with a custom-made glass topper, cut with a polished edge, that sits over the timber to protect it day-to-day without ever hiding the grain underneath. The four chairs have been reupholstered in a bold geometric fabric, diamonds stacked into zigzagging bands of deep red, black, sage green and warm tan, closer to a woven kilim than a conventional upholstery print, and full of the kind of colour that makes a dining room feel lived in rather than staged.
Fully restored and in genuinely excellent condition throughout, with minor scratches to the hardwood backrests, superficial only and consistent with age, not detracting from the set's rarity or overall presentation.
