Details
Made in England circa 1830 to 1840, this William IV mahogany serving stand follows the open tiered form also known as a whatnot, with a gallery backed upper surface, full width frieze drawer and two generous shelves. Turned front supports descend to carved paw feet that retain a distinct Regency influence within the more substantial William IV design language. The combination of a wide serving surface, concealed drawer and two open tiers gives this example an uncommon degree of practical usefulness for furniture approaching two centuries in age. Rich mahogany figure, gently bowed shelf fronts and the architectural spacing of the tiers give it a composed presence as a buffet, bar or display stand.
