About this piece
Salome stands with her skirt gathered in both hands above the head on the platter at her feet, cut in heavy black and bare cream paper, in this 1944 linocut by the Australian printmaker Edward Heffernan (1912 to 1992).
Heffernan belongs to the generation of Australian artists who took up the linocut in the 1930s and 1940s, working in bold, stylised figures with strong contrast between ink and paper. The rhythm of the cut lines in the skirt and floor carries most of the movement in the image.
This impression is numbered 10/48 at lower left, titled at centre and signed at lower right. It is presented in a slim timber frame with a wide white mat.
Condition: very good vintage condition commensurate with age.
