About this piece

Early Swedish handmade flax brake and thresher, c.1830, constructed in riven oak. A regional farm tool used in the preparation of flax: the brake was operated by hand to fracture the flax stems and shed the woody hull.

The mechanism comprises five blades, with two designed for vertical motion to assist the breaking process.

Provenance: found in an old barn in northern Sweden and personally imported from Sweden in the 1980s. A well-preserved example of Swedish regional agricultural history.
