This early 20th-Century European alpine cow bell is a beautiful antique and a rare find.
It features a leather collar strap, iron clapper, and the bell was crafted using a technique called fire-brass plating. A thin layer of brass was bonded to iron sheet metal.
Bells like this helped farmers track and locate free-roaming livestock grazing across the alpine mountain pastures where visibility is often limited by fog, forests, or uneven terrain.
The bell itself produces a beautiful mellow tone. Farmers could recognise particular cows based on the timbre of the bell which could also help to warn of predators.
Whilst spectators at events like the Tour de France use them as loud noise-makers, today this unique cow bell is a perfect antique and conversational piece to display in the home.
Signs of weathering, wear and tear. The leather strap has been mended with other leather pieces and it still very sturdy after decades!
