A very attractive salt glazed stoneware jug from the Doulton Lambeth factory. It is decorated with a rather uncommon Egyptian theme. A pharaoh's head forms the spout and the wings of Horus spread either side of the base of the handle. These wings and all the figures in the central frieze are what is known as sprigged or sprigging. Sprigs are created when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. This would have been a time consuming and delicate task. There are 24 such sprigged items on this jug. The jug itself is very crisply moulded and is in excellent condition. It stands 185 mm (7.25 inches) high and has a diameter of 160 mm (6.25 inches). C 1891-1910.
