This Doulton Burslem commemorative jug was issued in 1892 to mark the death of Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892), who was the British Poet Laureate from 1850 until his death. On one side of the jug is a moulded semi-relief bust of the bare headed poet beneath his name, together with a cherub blowing a trumpet and the date 1892, whilst beneath him are banners naming his play "Becket" and his poem "In Memorium". On the other side is another bust of him in a hat below the word Laureate, surrounded by laurel leaves, with the names of his poems "Crossing The Bar" and "Maud" on banners below. Beneath the spout are moulded representations of ferns, with the handle textured to represent laurel leaves and berries. The jug is glazed with a vellum coloured ground. Made in earthenware it stands 183 mm (7.25 inches) high and has a diameter of 137 mm (5 3/8ths inches). It is in very good condition. It would date to 1892.
