Details
Guillerme & Chambron for Votre Maison, sofa model ‘Denis’. France, 1960s.
Sofa in solid oak with characteristic decorative detailing to the back and capricious forms to the legs. The open back is articulated with slender spills, creating a visual lightness against the vibrant red velvet upholstery. A high back and thick cushions surround the seat for composed comfort.
Materials noted by the seller: wool, oak, leather.
Jacques Chambron (1914–2001) and Robert Guillerme (1913–1990) began their postwar production after studies at the École Boule (Guillerme, graduating first in 1934) and the School of Applied Arts in Reims (Chambron). The pair met during the Second World War in a stalag in East Prussia, forming a partnership that led Chambron to leave his work as a painter-decorator on Rue Nollet in Paris in 1948 to join Guillerme in Lille. In 1949 they connected with cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, whose nearby workshop manufactured their designs. Together they established “Votre Maison” (“Your Home”), focusing on functional furniture with expressive woodwork. Guillerme worked as designer, Chambron handled commercial responsibilities, and Dariosecq’s workshop produced the pieces. Over their career, Votre Maison created more than two thousand models.
