Details
Peter Phillips was an integral part of the UK's second wave of Pop Artists in the 1960s. Featured in Ken Russell's 1962 film "Pop Goes the Easel" along with his contemporaries Peter Blake, Pauline Boty and Derek Boshier. Peter was awarded a Harkness Fellowship in 1964 to study in New York. Custom Print No. 1 was created during this period at Chiron Press. Established by Artist Stephen Poleskie in 1963, Chiron Press was at the epicentre of American Pop Art until Poleskie sold it in 1968. Custom Print No. 1 was part of a folio titled "11 Pop artists Vol 1". Other artists in the collection include: Tom Wesselmann, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein. Printed in 1965, as a limited edition of 200, this is number 97. The other 103 reside in numerous galleries around the world including the Tate, the Met, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art - Chicago (MCA).
An eye catching piece, the vibrant colours still pop, whereas the silver foil aspects have an irresistible shimmer. Despite its relevance to art history, this is a dynamic piece that lifts a room and intrigues the viewer. As fresh as it was in 1965, this piece is for those who aren't afraid to punch some colour into their home, along with some Pop Art sensibility.
There is some wear to the foil components of the piece. We are unaware if this occurred during the making process or over time.
