About this piece
The “Clam” ashtray was conceived in 1968 and entered production in 1971 with the Italian firm Mabel. A true Space Age icon, its bold silhouette and playful functionality embody the optimistic, futuristic spirit of 1970s Italian design.
Composed of two interlocking molded halves with ribbed “teeth” detailing, the piece closes into a sleek sculptural object or lidded container and separates into two individual ashtrays—a clever fusion of form, function and Pop-era wit.
The orange-and-green version is among the rarer, most coveted colourways for collectors. This is the original 1970s design, not the later Habitat reissue, and bears the Mabel logo and Alan Fletcher’s name inside the orange half. It is in very good vintage condition with only minor surface marks consistent with age and use.
