Republic period Chinese lacquer furniture occupies a distinct place between traditional craftsmanship and the changing decorative arts of the early twentieth century. This low table is finished with a hand applied silver leaf ground beneath an intricately incised landscape of pavilions, scholars and attendants, framed by black lacquer and mother of pearl floral inlay. The naturally mellowed silver leaf has developed the quiet depth that only comes with time, while the hand worked decoration rewards closer inspection from every angle.
Increasingly difficult to find with this level of surface character intact, the honest losses to the lacquer are consistent with the materials and age, contributing to the authenticity rather than detracting from it. Pieces such as this are sought not for perfection, but for the history they continue to carry into contemporary interiors.
