About this piece
Charles and Ray Eames designed the Soft Pad group in 1969, adding thick sewn leather cushions to the cast aluminium frame of their earlier Aluminium Group chairs. The EA 205 is the side chair of the family: no armrests, no swivel, and a four star cast aluminium base.
The structure follows the idea that Eames first used in 1958. Two cast aluminium side frames hold the seat and back between them, so the upholstery is stretched across the frame rather than built over a solid shell, and the chair gives slightly as you lean back. The Soft Pad version sews foam cushions into the leather in three horizontal bands, which turns a lean, technical chair into one you can sit in for hours.
Without armrests, the chair slides fully under a desk or table, so it works as well in a home office as it does at a meeting table or around a dining table.
This Eames EA chair has been carefully restored and presents in very good vintage condition. It shows minor wear commensurate with age, while the leather remains supple and perfectly worn in with a rich patina. We have intentionally left patina to the aluminium base and can lightly polish it if requested.
Dimensions: 84 cm high, 52.5 cm wide and 59 cm deep, with a seat height of 43 cm.

Design Story
Working from the United States from the 1940s onward, they approached design as a total system rather than isolated objects. Their work blended architecture, furniture, photography, film, and everyday life into one coherent vision.
They are best known for their long collaboration with Herman Miller, which helped bring their ideas into homes and offices worldwide. Together they created pieces that are still instantly recognisable today.
Among their most iconic designs is the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, a piece that combined plywood shell construction with luxurious comfort and became a global symbol of modern living. Earlier work like the LCW chair explored new ways of shaping wood into ergonomic forms, while their molded plastic chairs, including the DSW, brought accessible modern design into everyday dining rooms.
They also extended their thinking beyond furniture. The Eames House in California, part of the Case Study House program, shows their core philosophy clearly: modular structure, honest materials, and a deep respect for how people actually live.
The Eames legacy is not just a set of famous objects. It is a way of thinking about design as something that should be playful, useful, scalable, and deeply human at the same time.
