These chairs are as solid as when they were made >85 years ago. With the double steel tubing at key junctions and a cross beam at the base, the frames were specifically built to never fail. Despite their sturdiness, they are a rather sleek chair for the time and materials used. The seat and backrest are covered in an early form of vinyl, which is mostly comprised of canvas. The focus of our restoration was to give them just enough attention to bring out their beauty without compromising the unique patina of each chair. Eight chairs are currently available.
A bit of local history
William Herbert Bysouth (1884 - 1953), was a Fitzroy blacksmith who started Bysouth's Steel Furniture Company at 526-530 Nicholson St in North Fitzroy around the 1920s.The company appears to have ceased operations around the time of William's passing in 1953, just two years after a fire tore through the factory causing £12,000 in damages, equivalent to ~$1.1 million today. A true local, Bysouth had a run-in with Fitzroy's own Macpherson Robertson (Australia's Willy Wonker), who apparently locked William in a room at the Chocolate Factory for conspiring to steal four boxes of Butter. William wasn't happy about this, suing both MacRob and the Fitzroy Police, whom also detained him for crimes involving butter, on the recommendation of the man who gave us Freddo Frog.
Original vintage condition. The frames are solid and rust free. The fabric of each chair has their own individual patina, with holes, tears, paint, rub marks present in some form on each chair
