About this piece
The B&B Italia Metropolitan ’14 is the armchair you end up sitting in every night. Jeffrey Bernett designed it for B&B Italia and it was shown in Milan in 2014, a refinement of his original Metropolitan, one of the company’s best-known chairs.
The shape does the work. The shell opens out like a funnel, wide at the arms and narrow at the base, so there is no single correct way to sit in it: upright with a book, sideways with your legs over the arm, or curled up. The high back supports your head and shoulders, and the whole chair turns on its swivel base, so you can face the room, the window or the television without getting up.
Underneath the fabric is a tubular steel frame wrapped in B&B Italia’s cold-moulded polyurethane foam, the construction the company is known for. This one is the high-back version in a cream textured fabric, complete with its lumbar and headrest cushions. Made in Italy.
It sits on the custom black four-spoke base, an upgrade over the standard brushed finish, which gives the cream fabric a sharp, modern contrast.
Ordered new, this chair is a custom order with an 18 to 22 week wait. This one is in our Fairfield showroom now.

Pre-owned. The chair has been thoroughly cleaned and presents in good used condition, with minor signs of wear. See photos.

Design Story
From early on, the brand positioned itself differently. Instead of producing decorative furniture, it embraced industrial processes, advanced materials, and a strong collaboration model with designers. This combination allowed it to scale high design without diluting quality, something that was still relatively radical at the time.
Its identity was shaped through long standing partnerships with some of the most important figures in modern design. Mario Bellini brought sculptural softness and emotional form, most famously with pieces like the Camaleonda and Le Bambole, which redefined what comfort could look like. Antonio Citterio introduced a more architectural and disciplined language, resulting in collections like Charles that became staples of contemporary interiors. Later, Patricia Urquiola added a more expressive, modular and playful approach, with designs like Tufty Time that feel both relaxed and engineered.
Beyond individual icons, B&B Italia also developed a dual identity: the experimental, forward looking main line, and Maxalto, a more classical and refined collection that speaks to timeless interiors rather than industrial modernism.
Over time, the brand became a reference point for global design culture. Its pieces are not just furniture but tools for shaping space, often used in architecture driven interiors where proportion, comfort and visual identity all matter equally.
Today, B&B Italia sits in a rare position: part industrial innovator, part cultural archive of modern living, and still actively defining how contemporary homes and public spaces feel rather than just how they look.
