Made of bent beech this classic bistro/café side chair has a a round cane medallion backrest which beautifully matches the circular cane work of the seat. The seat is hand caned. The chair has been restored to original condition.
While famous for steam-bending beechwood, Kohn also integrated beautiful turned wood elements. This chair features distinct bobbin-turned stiles flanking the backrest, along with decorative finials.
On the underside of the seat is an original paper identification label from the famous Austrian bentwood furniture company Jacob & Josef Kohn. The specific ornate rectangle paper label layout with the “Semper Sursum” medallion was primarily used by the company between 1880 and 1910. The highly decorative border featuring elaborate griffins and floral flourishes was specifically designed to prevent counterfeiting, as bentwood furniture makers fiercely compete in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Founded in 1849 by the father and son team of Jacob and Josef Kohn, the company rose to become the primary avant-garde competitor to Gebruder Thonet. Operating out of Vienna, Austria, they advanced industrial steam-bent beechwood production. During the early 20th Century, they frequently collaborated with legendary Viennese Secession architects and designers like Josef Hoffmann and Otto Wagner.
