About this piece
Arne Norell designed the Sirocco in 1964, and his own company, Möbel AB Arne Norell, produced it at its factory in Aneby, Sweden. It is his version of the safari chair: heavy tan leather slung across a turned solid timber frame, with nothing upholstered and nothing hidden.
Every part of the chair does a visible job. The back sling wraps the top rail and is held taut by brass buckles beneath the seat. The arms are single leather straps, riveted in brass to the front posts. A loose leather cushion sits on a slung seat, and cream contrast stitching runs around each panel. The round timber caps along the frame mark where it bolts together.
We have carefully restored the frame and leather while preserving the beautiful patina this chair has earned. The back carries soft creasing from years of use and the seat cushion has naturally deepened in tone. The leather remains supple and sound, ensuring the chair is ready for everyday use. Please note there are minor paint and water marks on the backrest and one armrest, reflecting a life well lived. It was previously owned by a very well known Australian artist, whose identity can be shared with the buyer upon sale.
While a brand new Sirocco chair from Sweden currently retails between $4800 and $5200 AUD before international shipping, this original piece offers the timeless design, the supple worn leather, and a genuine history that a new production simply cannot replicate.
