bazaa_backup.original_description:
A commanding childhood object that carries weight, use, and a distinctly Australian sense of making.
Produced by Roebuck in the early twentieth century, this rocking horse reflects the firm’s reputation for robust construction and practical proportions rather than ornamental excess. Hand carved in timber and finished in painted layers that have worn back honestly over time, the surface documents decades of handling rather than restoration. The restrained carved head, rope reins, and original red timber rocker frame place the piece firmly within Roebuck’s utilitarian lineage, built to withstand repeated use in substantial homes. What remains is not nostalgia, but presence, an object that reads as artifact as much as heirloom.

About this piece

Produced by Roebuck in the early twentieth century, this hand-painted Australian timber rocking horse prioritises robust construction and practical proportions over ornament. Hand-carved with a restrained head and finished in layered paint that has worn back through decades of handling, the surface reads as use rather than restoration.

Rope reins and the original red timber rocker frame place the piece within Roebuck’s utilitarian lineage, built to withstand repeated use in substantial homes. More than nostalgia, it carries presence—an object that registers as artefact as much as heirloom.
