About this piece

Georgian pewter meat cover (cloche/dome) by James Dixon & Son of Sheffield, England. The oval body is moulded in ribbed melon (pumpkin) form, a profile typical of Georgian metalware, and finished with an ornate leaf-and-scroll handle featuring twin gourd forms. A hanging loop sits at the apex for wall display.

Maker’s mark to the underside reads James Dixon & Son with the bugle-and-banner device, together with the number 399. The use of “Son” (not “Sons”) dates the mark to 1823–1835. The firm operated from Cornish Place, Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Designed for service at the table, the dome was placed over large plates to retain heat for meat courses. Also known as a cloche or plate cover.
