Compact French secrétaire à abattant from the last quarter of the 19th century, Napoleon III, in the Louis XVI taste. Recently restored to a museum standard.
The façade comprises four full-width, vertically stacked drawers with raised gilt perimeter mouldings and intricate brass tracery, further inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl floral motifs. Set between the first and second drawers, the drop-front panel is more profusely embellished in the same manner, including carved bone classical urns and birds. When opened, the reverse reveals the original tooled velvet writing surface with a rosewood border and a finely chased brass lock.
The fitted interior offers an open shelf above a bank of rosewood- and oak-lined drawers. Drawer fronts are in amboyna with an ogee profile, divided by shelves with contrasting kingwood vertical edge cross-banding.
A shaped, inset white marble top crowns the cabinet. Additional detailing includes multiple gilt decorative perimeter mouldings; applied female and foliate mouldings at the top and bottom of the full-height canted front corners; and side panels defined by twin rows of line inlays. The cabinet stands on a shaped plinth base with short turned feet and gilt collar mounts.
