About this piece
French 19th-century secrétaire à abattant in the Empire manner, finished in book-matched ‘feathered’ mahogany with a grey marble top. The exterior presents upper and lower book-matched panels and full-height turned free-standing columns with classical gilt-bronze capitals and complementary gilt-bronze rings at their bases, set above cylindrical feet.
The fall-front opens to a contrasting pale, book-matched figured walnut interior, well fitted and finely executed:
- Full-width secret top drawer with an open compartment beneath
- Bank of drawers comprising a double-depth central drawer flanked by two stacked drawers on each side
- Two concealed spring-loaded side compartments, accessed by pressing the lower timber panels, creating eight drawers and compartments in total
- Rectangular writing surface with inset gold-tooled green leather
The lower cabinet features a pair of hinged doors opening to two full-width stacked drawers with gilt-bronze pull knobs and an open storage section above. Retains its original key.
Condition: Excellent for age. The leather may be replaced with a colour of your choice if required.
