About this piece
English Victorian set of six dining chairs, 1850s–1860s, with generously proportioned show timber frames crafted from imported Central American mahogany. The design reflects a Greek Athenian influence, with curved back uprights that flow into the seat rails rather than continuing into rear saber legs, a form aligned with Grand Tour tastes of the period.
Each chair features a curved, arched top rail and a stylised lyre-shaped pierced central vertical splat. The seat rails show a French influence, with curved side rails and a serpentine front rail. Front legs are turned and downward tapered, terminating in original brass and white porcelain castor assemblies.
Condition: Timber frames are in very good condition, retaining the original hand French-polished finish, now with a mellowed colour and developed patina commensurate with age. Upholstery likely requires recovering to taste.
