About this piece
On offer for sale is a classic high end better than average quality genuine antique English George III Chest of Drawers probably made in the late 1700s. Very well constructed by craftsmen from selected cuts of very well figured prestigious imported central American Honduran Mahogany of warm nut / honey colour.
The case is of typical classic rectangular shape and is very well proportioned. The top features an overhanging stepped and Lambs tongue edge molding with a fine reversed carvetto molding beneath. There are no splits in the top or on either side.
There are a pair of side by side top drawers with three full width stacked and graduated drawers beneath. All drawers are lined with solid hard waring Oak and have fine dovetail joints, have beaded perimeter raised moldings, have their original iron locks, brass key hole escutcheons and original brass bale drawer pull handles. The grain pattern is consistent and matched through all the drawers. The drawers still feature the original 19th century blue lining paper. and there are full depth ‘dust catchers’ dividers ) between each tier of drawers
The whole is supported on a platform base with a molding reversed to mirror the lower top edge molding and is supported on four corner positioned elegant ogee ( shaped ) bracket feet which are more attractive and reflect higher quality than the usual straight bracket feet.
Condition: No splits or cracks to the case which retains its original hand French polished finish now mellowed. The drawers all sit and work very well and the runners are not warn. There are some minor old oxidised water marks to the top surface which may be removed and repolished. The timber has an excellent patina as do the brass handles however they may be polished to taste if required.
Size: Width 124cm x Depth 56cm x Height 104cm.
Price: Should be around $3,900 however our vendor says to offer it for $3,485.
Sellers Observation: Higher quality than most similar chest of drawers of its age and it is in more desirable original condition than most. Quality, style and condition.
