About this piece
Set of eight English dining chairs by Gillows of Lancaster, later George IV to early William IV, circa 1830. Crafted in dense, heavy Cuban mahogany, the chairs are of transitional design with upholstered, padded semi–kidney-shaped backs.
Show timber frames carry restrained carved detail to the kidney-shaped top rail and rear uprights. Straight, profiled seat rails sit over front legs that are turned and tapered with a long, boldly reeded mid-section; rear legs are of sabre form. The set is notably heavy and substantial, with generous seat proportions.
By repute and history, Gillows—established in the 1730s and active until the end of the First World War—are widely regarded among the foremost English furniture makers of their era.
Condition: Previously professionally refurbished by a former owner. The cover fabric may be changed to suit individual requirements.
Dimensions: 50 cm W x 50 cm D x 88 cm H
