About this piece

Set of four English George IV dining chairs, circa 1830, stamped by cabinetmakers Saunders and Wooley, noted chair and bedstead makers from Poughley, Oxfordshire. Hand crafted from selected imported Central American mahogany, the set presents a rare “show timber” frame design.

The shaped back is padded, with a lower exposed waist rail centred by carving. The upper back is rolled, detailed with two “compass point” circular carvings. Seat rails are straight and crisply profiled. Front legs are turned and downward-tapered, with an upper carved tulip motif and lower reeding.

Condition: Chair frames are in excellent original condition, retaining their original finish with a developed patina. Recently reupholstered with hand-rolled and stitched edges in calico, ready for a final top cover.
