Details
This is one for the connoisseur of very fine genuine antique English Georgian Furniture as it is as good a table as you will find iany where in Australia as this table would have graced a very large dining room in a very impressive and substantial house.
It is a genuine antique English George III circa 1800 Tri Sectional Dining Room Table and was made before the more traditional later tables that extended via a telescopic runner system.
The table is superbly made by craftsmen from the finest imported prestigious very heavy and well figured Cuban Mahogany which is regarded as the best of the Mahoganys. Each section of the table top is made from a very wide single board so no joins.
The Table comprises of a drop side ( Pembroke style ) centre section which has a frieze section with a cock beaded drawer on either side and with original brass drawer pulls. This section may be used by it self two seat two with the leaves down or 4 to 6 with the leaves up. There are two end sections which but up against the centre section to increase the seating by an extra 3 at either end plus there are two extra leaves that fit between the centre section and the end sections and when all are used the seating capacity is increased to 12 people. The edge of the table is finely reeded as are the small panels either side of the drawers and these compliment the reeded legs.
Each section of the table is supported on a centrally positioned column which is superbly turned featuring bulbous ‘bee hive‘ sections accompanying other ring turnings. From the upright cylindrical bases flow down ward and outward swept tapered and decoratively reeded legs which terminate in squared brass toe caps with their original all brass castor assemblies beneath.
The table is complete with all its original brass ‘forks’ which clip the sections of the table together.
The table is also polished on the under side such is the quality. To assist with support these tables usually have timber tenon shaped dowels which some refer to as a biscuit joints however this table has both all brass male and female components for the ‘dowels’ which is incredibly rare. It also indicates that the table was made by a top maker.
Condition: Structurally excellent and complete with all its original components which is very rare for such a complex table about 225 years old. one end leaf is a little darker than the rest which has faded so the table would benefit from a simple professional refurbishment of the top which we can organise.
Size ( fully extended ) - Length 342cm x Width 171cm x Height 74cm.
Price: Was over $22,000 about 45 years ago in the early 1980s however now still worth around $15,000 it is offered for sale at $12,850 which is a bargain by international standards.
Sellers Observation: This is a superb quality and rare table at a bargain price for what it represents. You could no longer get a copy of this quality made for this price nor could you get the wide boards of Cuban Mahogany to make it with.
