About this piece
19th-century Chinese sewing box of rectangular, octagonal-form, finished in black lacquer and decorated in gilt with traditional scenes and floral tracery. Fitted with end carry handles and raised on four carved and gilt feet.
The fully lacquered interior includes a lift-out tray with multiple shaped compartments, some with lids. It retains much of its original ivory sewing items, though the set is not complete. A well-fitted shallow drawer sits at the lower front, with a decorative hinged lid over the central compartment. With the sewing items removed, the fitted tray and compartment layout suit use as a jewellery or document box.
Condition: Structurally excellent, with expected light wear to areas of the exterior gilding.
