Description: An impressive antique Australian cedar servery or dumb waiter, beautifully proportioned and offering three generous tiers of open storage and display. The rich cedar has a warm depth of colour, complemented by substantial turned and fluted supports with carved detailing that gives the piece an elegant architectural quality.
A particularly desirable feature is that each of the three shelves is fully finished and moulded on all sides, including the back. This is significant because the piece was designed to be viewed from every direction rather than made simply to stand against a wall. This allowed a servery or dumb waiter such as this to sit in a dining room where guests could approach it from either side, while maintaining a beautifully finished appearance from every angle.
The raised, shaped back adds further character, with restrained scroll carving to the corners and a carved circular motif to the centre. The open arrangement of the shelves provides generous space for serving pieces, china, glassware or display while allowing the beauty of the Australian cedar and turned supports to remain clearly visible.
The servery stands on white porcelain and brass castors, allowing the piece to be moved when required. Its combination of functionality, quality cabinetmaking and all-round finish makes it an especially appealing example of antique Australian cedar furniture.
