About this piece
An Italian Walnut Three-Drawer Table, 18th Century
The thick single-plank rectangular top overhangs a frieze fitted with three drawers. The central drawer has an iron lock escutcheon, and the flanking drawers have iron ring handles. The base consists of shaped end supports, each formed from a pair of square-section legs joined by a shaped foot rail, linked by a low central stretcher. The surface has a rich, deeply worn and mellow patina.
Robust walnut tables of this type were a mainstay of the Italian provincial interior, made throughout Tuscany, Emilia and Lombardy from the seventeenth century onward. Related to the long monastic fratino tables of the conventual refectory, they served as writing tables, side tables and work surfaces in religious houses, farmhouses and palazzi alike. Their construction, with a heavy plank top, a frieze of drawers and end supports braced by low stretchers, puts strength and durability before ornament. The present table owes its appeal to its proportions and to a surface built up over generations of use, which gives it a sculptural, almost architectural presence.
